There are certain questions that appear to be stating the obvious and yet the obvious, while staring us in the face, is many times ignored.
The Internet is an important communication tool and yet many businesses are not using it as well as they might.
Firstly and in simple terms, communication is something that everybody and every enterprise does. Whether it is a programmed communication strategy or whether it is the absence of directed communication, it still happens. There is no such thing a 'no communication'. There is effective communication and communication that missed its mark (what may appear as no communication is communication that missed its mark).
Secondly it is a tool and a tool is as good as the craftsman that uses it.
Thirdly to use a tool one must learn about it. Not necessarily be the expert, but definitely use and apply the tool, and not be used by it. Imagine a painter who has all the talent in the world. If he learns how to use the techniques for painting, they will be part of his know how and therefore become tools for his creativity. If he doesn't learn about the techniques, then he will never reach his potential.
Communication via the internet means learning about it, so that you can plan and execute a strategy, and this strategy is all about communication. You do not need to learn everything about the internet, but you should identify potential uses. Then if you or the company you work with has the resources to be or hire experts, then innovate or bench mark.
Communication via the Internet should be for all companies a major part of their communication strategy.
In the final count, those business that do not use the Internet to communicate, and to communicate effectively, will lose out and perhaps disappear. The volume of business and the incredible range the Internet has reflects a great but tough potential for any business. There are those who will and those who will regret not having done so.
